Westlife: ‘No Sligo farewell’

WESTLIFE WILL not be playing a farewell concert in Sligo, due to the unavailability of a suitable venue and the fact two previous events in their hometown lost money.

Although the Mayor, Clr. Rosaleen O’grady had personally written to band members appealing for such a concert to take place – and Sligo Rovers had offered The Showgrounds as a possible venue – band members were unable to convince promoters that it would be a viable proposition.

The disappointing news comes from Kian Egan in a wide-ranging interview with The Sligo Champion in which he confirmed: ‘Sadly, a Sligo concert is not on the agenda.’ ‘We would love to see a concert in Sligo happening. We have been hammering our promoters to examine every possibility, but the decision is not in our hands. That’s not how it works. If it was down to the four of us we’d do it in the morning, but the reality is that no promoter will do it,” he revealed.

Kian revealed that the promoters of the previous Westlife concerts at Markievicz Park and Lissadell had lost money on the projects, and that was an inhibiting factor in any possibility of a farewell concert in the county.

“We pushed a number of promoters to make it happen in Sligo. We have spoken to every promoter possible about this, but unfortunately there has not been a positive reaction.

“Much as we would love to do it, it’s very unlikely, unless something dramatic changes out of the blue in the very near future,” Kian confirmed.
